In China, Nokia's Elop talks iOS, Android competition

On March 28, joining hands with China Telecom Ltd., Nokia launched Lumia 800C — its first Windows phone in China. Before its debut in China, Lumia was first released in London at the end of last October. The United States, Singapore, Hong Kong and other countries and areas have also witnessed its release.

The conference for its debut was held in Beijing Yongding Gate- a historic relic and landmark architecture. With a history from the Ming Dynasty, Yongding Gate was once destroyed but was rebuilt in 2004. The reason why they chose such a place for the launch of Lumia, said Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, was that the reconstruction of Yongding Gate symbolized the revival of Nokia itself. In front of Yongding Gate, Elop was interviewed by China’s press.

Editor’s note: This interview was translated from ZDNet China’s account.

: Among China’s three major operators, why did Nokia choose China Telecom as its partner to release Lumia? (China Telecom is a state-owned carrier with CDMA 3G networks.)

Elop: Our cooperation with China Telecom started when Nokia was planning to promote Windows Phone. China Telecom and its Chairman Wang Xiaochu have been supporting us all along. Since China’s three operators are all great and famous, we would like to cooperate with each of them. It’s only a matter of time. Nokia has to make some special modifications to satisfy the requirements of Telecom and CDMA phones.

Q: This week Tim Cook- Apple CEO visited China, too. And it seems that mobile phone makers are paying increasing attention to the Chinese market. How do you evaluate the changes happening in China’s smartphone market?

Elop: We not only frequently send our international high-level delegates to China for visits, but also have set up many local research centers and manufacturers in China, which means Nokia is well aware of China’s situation and is developing its business accordingly. We are striving for success in the Chinese market by catering to Chinese consumers’ constantly changing needs. Of course, like markets in other countries and areas, China’s market has been in a state of flux.

In such a dynamic and competitive market, lower-priced mobile phones have flooded into the market. Nokia will frequently release new products to meet the demands of the market. In addition, we will create innovation for China based on the unique tastes and needs of Chinese consumers.

Q: It has been over 150 days since Lumia’s launch in London last October. In China, there are already quite a lot of people using Lumia. Can you predict how Nokia will perform in the Chinese market in six months?

Elop: I’m not sure how many people are using Lumia in China. Since Nokia hasn’t started selling Lumia smartphones in China’s market, I guess most of its users bought it from Hong Kong or Singapore. I believe Lumia will embrace more users after its official release in China. As China is a large market for us, surely we would like to see Lumia boom in China. Anyway, it takes time for consumers to get to know our new products, to acquaint themselves with their user interfaces, to accept the new smartphone ecosystem. These all take time and effort.

We have accomplished our first step by bringing new products into China. After this, there will be advertising and promotion, and the feedbacks from the users. By that time we will know how Lumia has been performing in the market. Anyway, we are looking forward to a wonderful performance of Lumia in China.

Q: Last February, Nokia announced its new strategy. Now over a year has passed, what phase do you think is Nokia in? Are there great opportunities and challenges facing Nokia now?

Elop: With the new strategy, there are various phases in the transformation. At first we only had a blueprint of the strategy without actual products to implement the strategy. Then we released the first line of products and promoted them in each market. Now we are trying to find out how consumers feel about them and are improving the products all the way. After this phase, more and more of our products will be introduced to the market, each with new features and functions.

Besides, more companies will be our partners, to help with our research and development of new products and make them stand out. This is the way Nokia is expected to go. I’m glad and encouraged to hear users making positive comments on our products. They generally think Nokia products practical and useful. In such a competitive market where iOS and Android ecosystems are dominant, we are going to redouble our efforts to battle with them. We call for constant innovation, which is the key to Nokia’s success and enables us to solve the problems facing Nokia users.

Q: You mentioned earlier that Nokia hoped to convert 200 million Symbian users to Windows Phones. How are you going to do about it?

Elop: In the transition to Windows Phones, we need to make sure our Windows Phone system and mobile phones will attract consumers with good services. Besides, we will install relevant programs on the Windows Phone platform, ensuring a smooth transition from Symbian to it.

Q: In China, low-end mobile phones will be challenged by national brands such as Xiaomi, Huawei and Lenovo. How will Nokia tackle the challenge?

Elop: Actually, one of our new strategies include a whole series of smartphones including high-end ones and low-end ones. So we are trying to expand our portfolio and product choices.

Q: Would you like to comment on your management style?

Elop: I think it is important to keep your mind and eyes open. In the mean time, you need to be frank with your employees and communicate with them straightforward. As far as I’m concerned, I talk with my employees openly and honestly on many occasions, and I would spend a lot of time discussing with them the challenges. I believe such open communication can bring our business into a fast-developing track.

Rogers Communications plans up to 300 layoffs

Rogers Communications is planning to lay off up to 300 employees, the company confirmed Wednesday.

Spokesperson Patricia Trott didn’t specify a timeline for the job cuts but did say the company began notifying affected employees Wednesday.

“This is a very difficult decision, obviously,” said Trott, Rogers’ director of public affairs. “We don’t make these decisions lightly but we really feel we’re positioning ourselves well to maintain our leadership going forward.

The Toronto-based Rogers is Canada’s largest communications company, with more than 9 million wireless subscribers, a cable and Internet service provider and a media portfolio that includes City TV, Maclean’s Magazine and the Sportsnet networks. In December Rogers, which owns the Blue Jays, teamed with Bell to pay $1.3 billion for a majority stake in Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment.

Trott says no single section of the company is targeted for layoffs. Instead, she says the job cuts will be spread across the company, mostly affecting management and head office positions.

While stressing the corporation’s overall health Trott says layoffs will make the company more efficient.

“We’re always looking to streamline…and better focus our resources on initiatives that we know will have the most impact.” Trott said.

As of late Wednesday afternoon Rogers stock was trading at $39.12 a share, more than four dollars above the price it commanded a year ago.

The corporation is scheduled release its first quarter earnings report April 24.

BlackBerry maker gives up on consumer market

TORONTO –  Struggling BlackBerry maker Research in Motion said Thursday that it plans to return its focus to its corporate customers after failing to compete with flashier, consumer-oriented phones such as Apple's iPhone and models that run Google's Android software.

The shift in strategy came with a management shakeup that includes longtime executive Jim Balsillie leaving the board and severing ties with a company he helped build and later see decline.

RIM said it will focus its consumer efforts on targeted offerings that tap the company's strengths. That includes devices that employees will want to buy on their own and bring to the corporate environment. The company was exploring partnerships and other opportunities for consumer products that aren't deemed central. Those products could include software and features that are then incorporated into RIM's own offerings.

"We can't do everything ourselves, but we can do what we're good at," RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said.

RIM earnings miss Wall Street expectations

RIM has had limited success trying to enter consumer markets in recent years, particularly with high-end devices that sport touch screens popular with consumers.

Heins said a turnaround required "substantial change."

"BlackBerry cannot succeed if we tried to be everybody's darling."

- RIM CEO Thorsten Heins

"We believe that BlackBerry cannot succeed if we tried to be everybody's darling and all things to all people," Heins said. "Therefore, we plan to build on our strength."

Heins, who joined RIM four years ago and was most recently its chief operating officer, replaced co-CEOs Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis in January after the company lost tens of billions in market value. Lazaridis founded the company, and Balsillie had joined in its early years.

RIM said Thursday that Balsillie has resigned from its board after 20 years with the company. David Yach, chief technology officer for software, and Jim Rowan, chief operating officer for global operations, also are leaving.

The company said it was undergoing a comprehensive strategic review. Heins said he was open to selling the company, but "it is not the main direction we are pursuing right now."

The Canadian company has long dominated the corporate smartphone market. Its BlackBerrys are known for their security and reliability as email devices. President Barack Obama even refused to part with his BlackBerry after he took office.

RIM has sought to expand its appeal to consumers, but it has had trouble because the phones aren't perceived to be as sexy as its chief competitors. RIM has been counting on improvements with its forthcoming BlackBerry 10 system, but that has faced multiple delays. BlackBerrys also lag iPhones or Android phones when it comes to running third-party applications. Touch-screen models that lack physical keyboards have largely flopped.

For that reason, BlackBerrys are even losing ground in the business world, as employees demand iPhones or Android devices over BlackBerrys.

Apple sold 37 million iPhones in the last three months of 2011 -- more than what RIM shipped in the past three quarters combined. RIM shipped 11.1 million BlackBerrys in the latest quarter, which ended March 3.

RIM also bombed in its efforts to produce a tablet computer to compete with Apple's iPad. Among other things, the PlayBook received negative reviews because it launched without an email program and the popular messaging service BlackBerry Messenger. In December, the tablets that originally cost $500 were selling for $200, below the cost of making them.

BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis said it's a positive development that RIM is going to focus on its corporate clients and lower-end consumers.

"They are conceding the high-end consumer market with all these services that are wrapped around the platform," Gillis said. "At least there's some reality here. Are they going to compete against iTunes? No way."

Peter Misek, an analyst at Jefferies & Co. in New York, said RIM should have recognized that it is niche player and lost the battle with Apple three years ago. Misek said the company should have looked at partnering with other companies last year rather than now.

When he took the CEO job in January, Heins said a drastic change in strategy was not needed. He said Thursday that he changed his mind after conducting his "own reality check on where the entire company really is."

Apple iPhone 5 Rumored Specs Continue to Amaze Smartphone

Nearly most, if not all, of iDevices launched by Apple in the past couple of years have been no less than trailblazing products. Their next flagship smartphone is sure to exceed the ever-increasing benchmark. From what information we have round up so far, here is what we can expect from iPhone 5 due out in 2012.

Several rumors have already circulated about iPhone 5’s release. Japanese blog Macotakara initially said the smartphone will be released this fall, but Reuters contradicted this by saying Apple plans to launch the new iPhone before mid-year.

Summer time release of iPhones used to be common practice except for the iPhone 4S, which had a later release date. For now, we are banking on a mid-year release date, as reports from Foxconn say that massive hiring is already in place to expedite the production of the iPhone 5. Foxconn is Apple’s largest manufacturer of its smartphones.

Contrary to reports about a larger screen that will compete closely with Android smartphones, iMore’s editor-in-chief Rene Ritchie maintains that iPhone 5 will retain its predecessor’s rectangular shape and 3.5-inch display.

So far, Ritchie’s credibility is based on accurate reporting records regarding Apple products. Last year, he proved to be correct in saying that the next iPhone, which was to be called “iPhone 4S,” was going to be released first week of October. Ritchie was also correct in reporting the March 7 unveiling of the new iPad.

Reports from Foxconn confirmed that prototypes had a display measuring at least 4 inches plus other form factors different from those of the 4S. The reports about iPhone 5’s slightly bigger screen were further reinforced when shipment of 4-inch LCD panels from Hitachi and Sony was reported last November.

The iPhone 5 will definitely have the high-speed 4G LTE connectivity since Apple’s new iPad already came out with this feature. This in time with Qualcomm’s release of its 5th-generation chipset which supports TD-SCDMA, TD-LTE, HSPA+, EV-DO, embedded GPS, and LTE on TDD and FDD networks worldwide.

Management of your financial accounts may just be a tap ,
